Set up custom domain for return portals in Shipmondo

Get a more professional and recognizable branding for your customers.

Updated this week

This feature requires Shipmondo Pro. See the full feature list.

With the option to create your own domain for use in return portals, you get a more professional and recognizable branding for your customers.

Instead of using Shipmondo's standard domain, you can strengthen your brand, build trust and give customers a more consistent experience.

You can choose to create two types of domains: one for sending personal emails and one for use in Shipmondo's return portal. This way, you get full control over both customer communication and your return handling without Shipmondo branding.

In this guide, we will go through how to create a custom domain for your return portals.

How to set up an optional domain for a return portal

Set up DNS records

Log in to your Shipmondo account and go to Settings > Domains.

Click the Plus-button (+) at the bottom right to create a new domain. In Type, select “Return portal”, and under domain name, enter the desired domain.

Note! It must be a subdomain. For example, if your domain is mycompany.com, a domain could be retur.mycompany.com. Enter the entire domain. It is important that you own the domain, otherwise it will not work.

Finally, you must click “Create”.

Once the domain is created, the system will generate a DNS validation record.

This record is used to prove that you own the domain, and allows us to issue a certificate so that the connection to your return portal is encrypted and safe to use.

You must now log in to your DNS provider and set up the relevant records.

In the example above, you must create:

Type: CNAME

Name: _f84903ab26620a11efc6ed4809774a2e.return.mycompany.com.

Value:

You will receive your own unique information, which must be copied into your DNS provider.

Note! It is also possible to download the information to a CSV file, which you can send to your DNS provider, an internal developer or an external web agency that can help. The file contains all the information they need.

Our system continuously monitors whether the necessary records are ready. The DNS change itself can take up to 24 hours to take effect.

Set up DNS for the return portal

Until the domain is verified in our system, it cannot be used and will be marked with a yellow color.

When the domain is ready for use, the color will change to green. Then click on the domain again.

Here you will see the following:

Now the domain is configured in Shipmondo, and you have your own unique URL.

You must now create the new CNAME record so that your customers can also access it. As always, it can take anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours before it takes effect.

Note! We recommend making the new domain available to your customers after 24 hours, to be absolutely sure that it has taken effect on all DNS servers in the world, so that everyone can access it from their web browser.

Configure the return portal to use the domain

If you have not already created a return portal, you can follow the guide here.

Click on the return portal that will use the new domain.

At the Return portal link, it will specify our Shipmondo.com domain by default.

Expand the dropdown list to see the available domains. Choose your own domain here.

If Shipmondo's own domain is used for the return portal, it is required to specify a path (what is after the slash). For example, return.shipmondo.com/mycompany-retur.

If your own domain is used, the path is optional.

You can therefore use the same domain for several different return portals, where it is the path that distinguishes them.

Example:

return.mycompany.com/sweden

return.mycompany.com/refund

💡Expert tip: Besides getting your own domain, you can also remove “Powered by Shipmondo”, as shown on the picture.
