Shopify – Transferring metafields for customs documentation purposes

To automate handling of customs data in Shipmondo, you can transfer relevant information directly from your Shopify store.

Updated this week

This feature requires Shipmondo Essentials or Pro. See the full feature list.

When shipping goods to destinations outside the EU, it's crucial that your customs data is accurate and complete. Customs authorities in the destination country rely on this data to classify goods, calculate duties and taxes, and determine whether the goods are eligible for import.

For a detailed overview of customs data requirements, refer to our guide on filling in electronic customs documents.

Some data, used for customs declarations, exist as standard fields in Shopify and can be transferred automatically to Shipmondo:

  • Receiver name and address

  • Currency

  • Quantity

  • Country of origin

  • HS (tariff) code

  • Unit weight

  • Unit value

There is also data required for customs clearance, but Shopify does not include a standard field for this. Therefore, you need to create a custom metafield to store this information:

Once the metafield has been created and mapped correctly in your Shipmondo integration, the data will be transferred automatically and used to generate your customs documents.

How to configure metafields in Shopify

Step 1 – Create the metafield in Shopify

Log into your Shopify admin and go to Settings > Custom data > Metafields and metaobjects.

Click on Products, then click Add definition.

Note! If needed, create a similar metafield for Variants by selecting Variants instead of Products. Use the same key to ensure consistent mapping.

Name the field and take note of the Namespace and key shown after the "custom." as this will be used later in Shipmondo. In this specific example it is "contents_customs".

Click +Select type.

From the dropdown, select Single line text, and enable One value.

Click Save.

Step 2 – Map the key in your Shipmondo integration

Log into your Shipmondo account and go to Settings > Integrations > Orders.

Open your Shopify integration and go to the Products tab.

Check the box for Use custom mapping.

Under Contents (in english), choose Metadata from the dropdown and paste the key saved in Step 1 (e.g."contents_customs").

Click Save.

Step 3 – Fill out the metafields in Shopify

Once the metafield is active, go to your product pages in Shopify and fill in the English product descriptions, which will be used for customs declarations.

Step 4 – Refresh product data in Shipmondo

To ensure that your metafield data is imported correctly into Shipmondo, go to Order Management > Products in Shipmondo, click the three dots in the lower-right corner and select Import via integration.

Note! Shipmondo pulls product data using Shopify’s updated_at timestamp. If only the metafield is edited, Shopify does not automatically update this timestamp. To ensure that your changes are synced, make a minor change to a standard field (e.g. add an extra space in the product description) and save the product.

Step 5 – Enable automatic customs declaration

You’re now ready to enable automatic customs processing.

Follow Step 2 in this guide to activate automatic customs in your Shipmondo account.
