Non-conveyable consignments

Non-conveyable shipments are shipments that cannot be transported by the conveyor belts in GLS' automatic sorting systems because of their size, form or outer packaging.

These are either sorted manually in depots and distribution hubs, or can even be rejected and sent back to the sender.

Read more about GLS' safe packaging and conveyable shipments in this guide for safe parcel dispatch.

Exceeding maximum dimensions

In case your parcel's maximum dimensions exceed the maximum Shipmondo supports for GLS shipments, it will incur a surcharge.

Exceeding maximum weight

In case your parcel's maximum weight exceeds the maximum Shipmondo supports for GLS shipments, this will incur a surcharge.

The price of the surcharge is per kg over the maximum weight.

Alternative delivery for business parcels

In case a business parcel (parcel to a business address or Pick&Ship) fails to be delivered during the first attempt, it will be redirected to a nearest GLS Parcel Shop.

This redirect will incur a surcharge for alternative delivery.

It is therefore important that you ensure that the receiver address is designated as a business address by GLS (there's a registered company at the address) and that there's someone present to sign for the parcel at the address on workdays between 7 AM and 5 PM.

Read more here.

Alternative delivery for private parcels

In case a private parcel (parcel to a private address) fails to be delivered during the first attempt, it will be redirected to a nearest GLS Parcel Shop. This redirect will not incur a surcharge.

However, there is an exception regarding GLS Pick&Ship - A redirect of this will incur a surcharge for alternative delivery.

Unsuitable for Parcel Shop delivery

In case a parcel sent as a Shop Delivery parcel (delivery via GLS Parcel Shop) doesn't comply with GLS' requirements and needs special handling, it will incur a surcharge.

A shipment is not suitable for delivery via GLS Parcel Shop if it i.a.:

  • exceeds GLS' maximum dimensions

  • contains hanging garments, unpacked goods or goods not suited for parcel distribution

  • contains hazardous goods

  • contains living or dead animals etc.

GLS' general terms and conditions apply, please see more here.

GLS reserves the right to send such a shipment back at the sender's expense.

Re-addressing

In case the address information of the recipient is incorrect and it requires GLS to manually enter and correct your booking information, it will incur a surcharge.

Island fee

Delivery to the following destinations incurs an additional surcharge: Corsica, The Isle of Man, The Channel Islands, The Shetland Islands, The Balearic Islands, The Canary Islands, Madeira, The Azores, Ceuta and Melilla.

For more info, please click here.

Tire fee

GLS doesn't distribute tires of any sort through GLS Parcel Shops, no matter the packaging. If it happens, it will require extra resources throughout the production chain and it will incur a surcharge per tire.

Failure to cancel pick-up for GLS Pick&Ship and Pick&Return shipments

Failure to cancel pick-up when canceling GLS Pick&Ship and Pick&Return shipments will incur a surcharge.

Re-delivery

There might be situations when GLS, for various reasons, are not able to redirect a parcel. This means that GLS will have to try and re-deliver the parcel to your receiver.

Re-delivery may also occur because of i.a. following reasons:

  • the receiver company is closed for holiday

  • error in the receiver address, which GLS has cleared at the depot or with the help of the sender

  • GLS not having access to the receiver's mailbox in order to advise on alternate delivery

  • the shipment is not suitable for delivery through GLS Parcels Shops (due to size, weight, packaging or content) etc.

Re-delivery incurs a surcharge which is the same as the price for the original shipment, thus doubling your original shipment cost.

GLS' general terms and conditions apply, please see more here.

Returns

If a parcel is not picked up in time or if it doesn't comply with carrier's requirements etc. and is returned to the sender for this reason, the cost of the return will be charged to the sender. The price of the return shipment is the same as the price of the original shipment.
